About

I am a 38 year old male living in a common-law relationship with a teacher and her 15 year old son in Alberta.   I enjoy the work I do for the government, but neither my spouse or I enjoy the shift work.  I also have my own part time business that generates some extra income.

Over the years I have spent a great deal of time reading about personal finance both in books and on the internet.  My interest in personal finance began when I was around 17.

My spouse and I purchased a home together in July of 2008 and took a 40 year amortization to ensure we had the cash flow we thought we needed.

Our financial and personal goals soon became more focused.  Our goal is to pay off our mortgage so I can leave my government employment and the shift work to enjoy a better lifestyle.  I am looking forward to summers off with my spouse and building my business.

On July 2, 2008 we moved into our new home and had a mortgage balance of $316,000.  The goal is to have the mortgage paid off by July 2, 2013.  I invite you to take the journey with us.

Being very debt averse a majority of my blog is going to deal with debt and credit.  There will be pieces of personal finance such as, money saving tips and ideas and investing.  It is my hope that I can provide some insight and information about debt to people before the end up “behind the eight ball.”

In 1987 at the tender age of 17 I started to take an interest in personal finance and mortgages, in particular.  I started by reading books; self- educating myself to better my financial position.

In 2004 I completed the educational requirements required to write the Certified Financial Planner Exam and was successful in passing the exam on my first attempt.  Shortly after passing the CFP exam I completed and passed the Canadian Securities Course Exam.  After meeting with several financial institutions about employment I realized I was not interested in selling investment and insurance products.  In 2006 I completed the Mortgage Associate Program and passed the Provincial Qualifying Exam.  I am currently a licensed Mortgage Associate in Western Canada.

Thank you for visiting and I look forward to providing you with valuable information.
